Top 5 Couples
Judges: Nigel Lithgoe, Mary Murphy, Lil’C
I was out of town all week and am watching the episode very late on TiVo. My commentary will be abbreviated as a result.
Comfort is back on the show because Jessica broke some ribs.
Courtney and Joshua – kind of an interesting hip hop routine, but the dancing from Courtney appeared to suffer from the restrictive tightness of her jeans. It seems like she couldn’t get the extensions with her legs and such that she needed, because the clothing wouldn’t allow it. The judges liked Joshua’s performance, but Courtney’s less so.
Chelsie solo – for a girl with such a cute figure she sure picked a horrible dress. It looked like those big brushes in the automatic car washes. The dancing was not impressive.
Kherington and Mark – they seem uncomfortable with the two-step style. The whole thing lacked energy. The judges liked Mark better than Kherington and said he had a hard time because of her lack of technique.
Gev solo – it seemed like a lot of creative tricks. I don’t know that it was a great dance, but it was fun.
Comfort and Twitch – the smooth waltz started off very pretty and nice. The choreography failed to build with the music, however. There was a great opportunity that was lost. Mary says it lacked power and didn’t cut it.
Courtney solo – she looked strong and the movements were good, but the routine didn’t seem to flow very gracefully.
Katee and Will – I generally don’t like Broadway routines and this is no different. The whole thing seemed way too campy and corny. the boat as a prop was lame and the gag at the end with the water in Will’s mouth was stupid. Sad, because they’re both such good dancers. The judges loved it though. Go figure.
Mark solo- too much repeated motion for such a short dance. other than that it was kind of interesting. Don’t think it went with the music though.
Chelsie and Gev – it’s contemporary which means I probably won’t get it no matter what. There are some nice moves, but overall it just seems like jerky flailing as contemporary usually does. The judges fawned over it though.
Comfort solo – Overall probably the strongest solo thus far.
Twitch solo – there should have been more to it but what there was, was quite good. There was just a bit too much filler between “real” moves.
Courtney and Joshua – I don’t know anything about rhumba, but the dance was pretty. Joshua is one of my favorites and Courtney is just so cute. The judges loved it and went on and on. Joshua jokes that Will and Twitch takes their shirts off all the time and says he will do so in the future.
Katee solo – it was a nice enough dance but it didn’t make me jump up and down.
Kherington and Mark – a very disco-looking jazz routine… When they’re on it looks good but too often they lose sync with each other. The judges liked bits of it, but weren’t thrilled overall. Nigel thought it had no passion.
Will solo – there were some nice jumps but also a lot of just running around. Meh.
Comfort and Twitch – two hip hop dancers doing hip hop—expectations are high. Their costumes are goofy as hell but the dance is really fun. They nailed the moves that I could see right up until the end, when it started to come apart a little bit with the in sync bits (I think they were tired). Comfort’s makeup is gross. The judges thought it was “buck” which is apparently good.
Kherington solo – I liked her solo. It didn’t have a ton of hard tricks, but it was fun and had character.
Katee and Will – it’s the first pas de deux for the show. Gosh, Will has his shirt off! Oh and the horror—they’re using David Archuleta’s butchery of the song Imagine which is so bad it makes me angry. (It made me angry both times he did it on American Idol, too. I hate it.) The dancing really is very good, but it’s hard to pay attention to it with the horrible, horrible song. The judges loved it and raved about all of it.
Joshua solo – he starts off with this amazing front flip with a totally straight body. I love his personality while he dances.
Chelsie and Gev – Chelsea should have asked someone “does this dress make my butt look fat?” because it does. It is a very ugly dress. Gev did a neat little slide thing with his feet. The ending move where Chelsea is upside down with her legs open and her crotch in Gev’s face was about the least attractive thing ever. Other than that, I think the moves looked sharp and it was a fun dance. The judges loved it but thought that Chelsea outdanced Gev.
