Top 6 Couples

Tonight’s Judges: Nigel Lithgoe, Mary Murphy, Mia Michaels

Oh my god, I actually like Cat Deeley’s dress! It’s actually pretty and flatters her figure! She doesn’t look like she’s pretending to be a household cleaning or personal hygiene product! I think her hair looks good like that as well. Is this a first?

Chelsie and Mark salsaChelsie and Mark – salsa – Music: “Fuego,” Joe Bataan. I think Chelsie’s dress from the rehearsal video was far more flattering than what she’s wearing in the performance. They seem to be dancing it well but it isn’t holding my interest. I don’t see anything standing out technically as being “wrong.” The feather thing on her butt is distracting me. The lift at the end looked labored. Nigel liked the footwork and said Mark got into character well. He says Chelsie was good but that her relaxed style makes Mark look even more tense. Mary says it works for her, and gushes a bit over Chelsie. Mia says “she is so gorgeous…” and says she wants to stab her. She says it was danced well but that there was something awkward about Mark.

Comfort and Thayne hip hopComfort and Thayne – hip hop – Music: “Can We Chill,” Ne-Yo. I like a lot of the moves. They’re clever choreography. Good use of the stairs, and this is really highlighting Comfort’s comfort zone. Thayne holds his own as a white boy, I think. (He expressed doubt at the rehearsal.) But I think he looked a little softer than he could have. Nigel says that Comfort didn’t “relate to” Thayne except at the very beginning and the very end, and predicts them for the bottom three. Mary says there was no chemistry and that it was “just good.” Mia says it was “a little bit more than good” but that after the part on the stairs they were lacking. She says that she thinks Comfort is just riding along and not rising to her potential.

Jessica and Will contemporaryJessica and Will – contemporary – Music: “Silence,” Unfaithful (soundtrack). Right off the bat I have to say wow—I really like Tyce DiOrio better as a choreographer than Mia Michaels. I “get” what he’s doing with these two bodies, where with her stuff I usually sit her thinking “whaa….?” The music is difficult. Vocal with even some parts of total silence, yet they make it lyrical and evocative. It’s a very primitive feel—very raw emotions—very well done. Honestly it made me get misty eyed and that’s rare for this show. Nigel says it was “an extraordinary piece of work” by Tyce. He says it was extremely erotic (I agree) and calls it stunning. He loves Will’s lines and strength. He says that Jessica is (finally) keeping up with him. He says the dancers added a connection to the choreography that the previous couple lacked. Mary says it was one of the most amazing pieces she’s seen on the show. Tyce in the audience does a drop-jaw. Mia says that her first reaction to the music when Tyce played it for her was that she fell asleep, but then she saw the dance and she said it was “the perfect human moving body art” and said it was like a painting. She gushes for a while.

Courtney and Gev cha-chaCourtney and Gev – cha-cha – Music: “ Don’t Stop The Music,” (The Wideboys Club Mix) Rihanna. I feel the dance is pretty tight. There is an elastic quality drawing the two of them together through the whole choreography. I feel a chemistry between them (but it may be just that Gev has that huge crush) and they’re just so cute together. Nigel says that Courtney was “as sexy as Anya” and that Gev was brilliant even though it wasn’t technically great. He tells him not to purse his lips so much. He says they suit each other as a couple better than any other couple on the show. Mary tries a fakeout when Cat asks if it was magic (it was) and does some stupid voice with “cha cha cha cha cha” several times. She gives some critical notes to Gev but says that they drew her in and made her forget about it. There is an awkward back and forth with Nigel making train noises, and Mary finally says they’re on the tamale train. Mia says it was “fabulosity at its best.” She says they aren’t the best dancers on the show but that their performance quality is amazing. Cat asks Gev if he shaved his chest (he did) and Courtney says she is so glad he did. There is a humorous exchange between everybody about his chest hair.
