So You Think You Can Dance 2008 Top 7 Couples Results Show Recap

~ Friday, July 4, 2008

The Results Show

Intro – the group dance is horrific. that’s all I can say about it. It was a trainwreck. With a piano on wheels. Cat’s hair is up in some sort of Mickey Mouse buns, and she’s wearing a collar made of bobby pins. There is a pointless montage of Tyce DiOrio criticizing people during the auditions.

Voting Results

Kherington and Twitch – are safe, after a fake-out by Cat that could be seen a mile away.
Katee and Joshua – are safe.
Kourtni and Matt – are in the bottom three, not surprisingly.
Courtney and Gev – bottom three for the first time.
Chelsie and Mark – safe.
Jessica and Will – are safe.
Comfort and Thayne – are the final couple in the bottom three.

Time Killing Dance

They brought the freakish popper, Robert Muraine, from the auditions who I said was good in the sense of performance art but not so much a dancer. He is the one who “gave up” in Vegas. He does a routine to “Everybody Dance Now” which looks like pretty much exactly the same stuff he did in his audition, but to a different song. I was bored within 30 seconds, and was grossed out at the end when he fondled his own butt as though he were sexy instead of just creepy. He’s interesting once, but beyond that, not so much. They discuss him having a dance battle with some other popper on the show at some future date.

Solos – Dancing for their lives

Kourtni – What is with people doing their solos to songs with no beat? This one didn’t even have any musical accompaniment. This did nothing for me.

Matt – He had some really nice moves in his solo, but it had nothing to do with the music, which again had no beat and was pretty much just vocals.

Courtney – She seemed a little off balance a few times, and I didn’t feel any real passion from the dance.

Gev – That was a hell of a lot of fun to watch. For once it was something with a real beat and he moved to the beat and played to the audience. Well done.

Comfort – It was a little too… Gollum? for me. I really like her better doing ballroom, actually.

Thayne – The best of the solos, I think. He created a character and energy with his 30 seconds, even if it was a bit odd right at the end when the “so you think you can dance” music kicked in.

Space Filler Song

The band is One Republic, who I don’t think I have ever heard of, but a quick Googling turns up the fact that last season Danny & Anya did a dance to one of their songs, “Apologize.” It isn’t bad, but it isn’t special, and the guy’s voice bothers me. It sounds like he’s copying somebody else’s unique sound, but I can’t remember who it reminds me of.

Judging Results

Nigel says he has never cared as much for the contestants as this season and tonight is really hard for him. He says he is looking forward to when the audience gets to decide and he doesn’t have to anymore.

First the girls: He says they are not unanimous and calls Courtney forward and told her she is safe. He calls Comfort forward and says that he did not vote for her, but that she got the other votes and is safe. Kourtni is going home. This didn’t surprise me, though I liked her a lot. So we lose our Uma Thurman lookalike.

Next the guys: Nigel calls Gev forward and says he is thrilled with him, and he is staying. Nigel says that they were unanimous in the decision. Matt is going home because while he came in at a high level, he hasn’t improved since the beginning of the show. I agree with the decision.
