Oh where to begin? This movie was such a horrible, horrible mess! I really wish MST3k was still on because this is EXACTLY the kind of thing that would have been perfect for them. The first thing that stood out was the cheeseball opening graphic sequence. I then became very worried about the acting when the woman playing the tv reporter began talking. She sounded like a second grader who has just mastered a few new words trying to read the script. The cadence was bizarre, with no real sense of how the natural inflection of a spoken sentence should sound.
Stephen Baldwin then showed up to blow up a building, the special effects for which appeared to be an animated GIF created in MS Paint. Ooooh dear. No, things did not bode well. Not well at all. The acting, dialogue, and general script unfolded as one ghastly moment followed by the next. Shoddy science, stilted, unnatural interactions between characters, cliche after cliche after cliche…
The real hilarity began, however, when they went up in the Space Shuttle. Lordie. First glaring error is the crew clomping around the shuttle in full gravity, falling down to the floor, etc. Not only was there absolutely NO attempt to show zero-gravity, but the action actually depended on gravity! Then you see the pilot, who had moments before told us they were flying in excess of 20,000 mph, flying through a debris field, dodging chunks of the moon right and left. Sorry, but you’d never even see them at that speed, let alone have the ability to dodge. I laughed my butt off when she started to descend toward the moon and appeared to downshift the space shuttle to slow down.
The whole thing just gets worse and worse from the first minute to the last. I would recommend watching this only with several friends and a good quantity of alcohol handy.
