Team “The Weasels for World Domination”
Distributed.net
Distributed Computing! This stuff is a bit outdated as I admit I haven’t run this in quite a long time, but it is still chugging away and the team exists and so on. Jump in if it’s your thing! They used to offer prize money, but really, you do it more just the coolness of being part of a larger machine.
Lifted from the Distributed.net homepage:
“What is Distributed.Net? As a “loosely knit” group of computer users from all over the world, we take up challenges which require a lot of computing power. We solve these by distributing the cpu power needed over the computers of our members. That’s why we are called “distributed.net”. Read more about it in our mission statement.”
What does it entail? Mostly a small cow running in your systray (yes, a cow
) that crunches keys using your leftover cpu time. I haven’t notice any slowdown in my computer speed.
If you want to be even cooler, you can join our team, The Weasels for World Domination (aka “team 13309”)! To join, use your email address and your distributed.net password and join the team here. If you’re not a part of distributed.net yet, the first step is to download the correct client, then follow the instructions (here is the FAQ). You’ll never notice it is there, I promise (except for the occassional “mooooo”). See the team’s stats and the team’s summary!
Ifyou join the team, feel free to use the team logo:
