Disowned?:

From the time I was a little girl I had a close relationship with my godmother, Barrie. She lived with Kathleen, and they were lovers. I didn’t really catch on to this until some time around the beginning of high school, but that is my problem. I loved Barrie and Kathleen like family. I considered them to BE family. Growing up I often spent weekends at their place out in the foothills, taking long baths... read more...

Dan's Graduation from Residency

I’m so proud of Dan! He’s almost done with residency! (9 days to go!) They had the graduation ceremony/handing out of diplomas the other day at butt-thirty in the morning; I assume they do it early because many/most residents are moving immediately after completion of their programs and it would be hard to get everyone together in one place after that. Anyway, here is a video of Dan’s residency director introducing Dan, making him juggle...

Movie Review: Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (2011)

I was a huge fan of the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie. I thought it was a ton of fun and I watched it several times. Movie two was a little weirder, but I still enjoyed it. Movie three confused me more than anything, and I thought it was too long. Movie four… well… let me preface this by saying that we started watching it Friday night on DVD, but my husband fell asleep in the middle, so I woke him up, stopped the movie, and we finished watching it on Saturday afternoon. This may have affected how I felt about it.

Movie Review: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 (2011)

[Very mild spoilers] This movie picks up at the exact moment when the last movie left off. I think I’d have been wiser to watch Part 1 immediately before going to see Part 2, in fact, because they give you no flashes to the past, no backstory, nothing. Not that this is a complaint, it’s simply a fact…

Movie Review: Kung Fu Panda 2 (2011)

Kung Fu Panda 2 wasn’t as funny as the first movie. Sequels often don’t live up to the movie they’re continuing and I have to say I think Kung Fu Panda 2 falls into that category…

Movie Review: Black Swan (2010)

Black Swan is the kind of movie that leaves you wondering at the end what exactly it was that you just saw. We follow the journey of Nina as she lands the lead role in the ballet Swan Lake and tries to prepare for the darker role of the Black Swan. Her director is not sure that she, as innocent as she is, has it in her to portray the darker role, though he acknowledges that she dances well enough to play the part…

Movie Review: Furry Vengeance (2010)

We saw this movie over Labor Day weekend on Pay Per View and I can only say I’m glad I didn’t see this in the theater. As an afternoon boredom-killer at home it wasn’t quite so bad, but if I’d paid $10 each to see it as part of an evening out I’d be a little miffed…

Movie Review: Avatar (2009)

[Warning: contains spoilers!] I didn’t know much about this movie when I walked into the theater. I knew it was supposed to be groundbreaking in filmography, and that it was getting a lot of press. I knew that it was in fancy-pants 3D and was…

"Being Art" video

“Being Art” oil on canvas, 57” x 57” which I painted in 2008. This piece explores the juxtaposition of the bipolar mind and the urge for artistic expression. It portrays the attempt to make one’s crazy life itself into a work of art, rather than letting it destroy you. Music is “Two In Love” by Scott Huckabay, used with permission. Movie Review: Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009)

[Warning: contains spoilers!] It must be said that it was a lot of book to try to pack into one movie (which is why, while it means an annoying wait, I’m glad they have decided to do the last book as two movies). Even at nearly three hours it was still going to be missing a lot of things no matter what they did. However, there were so many elements removed (and characters—no Dursleys at all, for example) that most fans of the books…

It's A Fine Day (A Juggling Video)

I created this video in 2006 to teach myself how to use video editing software—it is not by any means an impressive display of juggling. All the actual juggling is just the most basic of things—the hardest things in this video I think are a short run of Mills Mess and another short clip of Dan passing 7 clubs with me. So don’t expect to be blown away by my mindblowing juggling talent, as I...

A Juggling Romance--How Dan and Katherine Met (smaller video)

This is the video that played (partially*) before the ceremony at our wedding (though I did add some stuff later, since I had some time). Dan and I met in 2004 at a juggling festival in Buffalo, NY. This is a retelling of that story, with some…err…artistic liberties taken. And fancy special effects. Very fancy. Special thanks to Jack and Jeri Kalvan, Michael Karas, and the Flying Karamazov Brothers: Mark Ettinger, Rod Kimball, and Paul Magid,...

Movie Review: Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008)

Things I've Bought on Amazon

Amazon has a nifty widget that will display all the media (books, movies, music) you’ve bought from them. It’s kind of weird to look back and see things I bought almost 10 years ago, but it’s also a reminder of things like “oh hey, that was a cool book! I should go reread that…” Now not everything is stuff I bought for myself. Some of these things were bought as gifts and such, but it’s sort...

Movie Review: Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (2007)

Movie Review: Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007)

This was a fun movie. It was. I enjoyed it. I’m not a comic book person and so I had to have my friend brief me on the backstory before the movie started (I didn’t see the previous ones) but as she said to me, it’s pretty simple stuff. So why am I only giving it two meows?

Harry Potter and the Nudity Kerfuffle

So apparently Daniel Radcliffe, of Harry Potter fame, is starring in a London production of the play Equus, in which he appears not only nude, but nekkid. Daniel is currently 17 years old and, as must be expected, there are those who are all in a tizzy over the idea of the poor innocent babe appearing naked on stage. There seem to be two primary camps of indignation, which have significant overlap: Dan is too young!...
