So You Think You Can Dance 2008 Auditions Recap (Salt Lake City, Dallas)

~ Friday, May 30, 2008

Last week on the season premiere I didn’t take notes, so I can’t recap that episode (though it is still on my TiVo and I hope to do it retroactively in the next few days). Starting this week, however, I am going to try to write a recap of each new episode. This is episode 2, auditions from Salt Lake City, Utah and Dallas, Texas.

Salt Lake City

Day 1

Chelsie Hightower – I get so tired of these backstory bits. I don’t care that her family lost a house and some cars and that paying for dance lessons was hard, unless they lost the house and cars to a monster attack or alien abduction. Just show us the damned audition! Once they got to the actual dancing I thought she was very good. The guy she was dancing with looked a bit goofy, though. Mary is right, she has amazing legs. She’s put through to Vegas.

Brett Banford – Ok, this is one rare instance where I liked getting the backstory. In this case the whole reason he was on the show was about the story. I have a sister with Down Syndrome (also very high functioning) and so this was especially touching for me. He seems like such a nice guy, and so enthusiastic. I thought he danced well especially when you realize that one of the difficulties associated with Down Syndrome is lack of muscle strength and tone. He did a great job. I wanted to go hug him at the end too. Not sure how long this YouTube video will be up before it gets deleted.

Michael Moore – Native American guy. Really good looking but the dancing wasn’t that great. He had a really great attitude with the judges, though. Totally admitted that he’d not done well and was able to laugh at himself. He seems like a cool guy. Mary is hardly one to criticize someone for seeming “crazy”. Loved the joke at the end where he said he “teaches dance—no I am totally kidding, I don’t” and the crazy “dismount” jump off the stage. I think he’d be fun on the show, but he isn’t a good enough dancer, unfortunately.
